1. Brief introduction of Culips.com

Culips.com is the home of the Culips English Learning Podcast. Every week we have a new, free audio episode available on our site and through iTunes. Our podcast is for people who want to have fun while learning natural, everyday English, focusing on idioms, expressions, and slang. We also have a busy Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CulipsPodcast), where listeners can ask questions, give feedback, or just drop by to say hi.

2. What makes Culips.com different from other English learning websites?

At Culips, we focus on helping people to learn natural spoken English in a FUN and CASUAL way. Each episode takes listeners out of the classroom setting and introduces them to common slang, natural expressions, and interesting vocabulary. Culture is also an important part of Culips. We're based in Canada, so we often talk about Canadian and North American culture in our podcast and on our website. In all our episodes, we always speak English as it’s actually used in day-to-day life, and we give you plenty of explanations of new or interesting terms.

3. You are undoubtedly an expert in teaching English to ESL students. What would you say about the most critical factors leading to success in English learning?

In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of learning any new language is using the language as much as possible, and not being afraid of making mistakes.

4. In Korea, a huge number of people are eager to learn English. However, unfortunately, it is true that not many learners can reach a certain level where they feel confidence in speaking English and self-fulfillment. What kind of advice can you give Korean learners who hope to achieve their goals in English learning?

Don't wait until you feel confident to start speaking! I've lived in Korea for just over two years now, and I think that the fear of making mistakes when speaking English is something that holds a lot of Korean English learners back. There is so much emphasis here on learning English, but most schools also put a lot of emphasis on being perfect. Students can only get good marks if they have perfect spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. But when learning a new language, none of those things is really as important as just being able to express yourself and get your ideas across to the person you're talking to.

When my husband and I first came to Korea and we couldn't speak any Korean at all, we appreciated it so much when someone at a restaurant or shop tried their best to speak a little bit of English to communicate with us. Even if they made lots of mistakes, didn't speak in full sentences, or didn't have great pronunciation, we didn't care at all! We were just so happy that we could understand what they were trying to say and that they were trying their best to help us.

These days, there are more and more English-speaking foreigners living in Korea, whether they're teachers, engineers, or even students. Be brave and talk to these people! Remember that most Westerners in Korea can't speak very much Korean, so they won't think anything bad about you if your English isn't perfect. Your English is still probably much better than their Korean!

A little while ago, my parents came from Canada to visit me in Korea and we met in Seoul. They got a bit lost and were starting to get worried. But as they were looking at their map, with confused expressions on their faces, a kind Korean came up to them and asked if he could help. His English wasn't perfect, but he saw that they needed help and was brave enough to speak up and approach them. He gave them directions and even walked with them part of the way to make sure they could find the place. My parents didn't care at all whether he could speak English perfectly. They were just so grateful that someone was kind enough to help them. They went back to Canada and told all their friends what a nice place Korea was to visit!

So my advice is just to use English as much as you can, and try to remember that native English speakers won't care if you make mistakes.

5. What are your goals or plans for the near future through Culips.com?

In the future, we plan to continue making new and intriguing podcast episodes and building our fan base. We're also interested in finding ways to connect English learners around the world. Eventually, we may also branch out to providing editing services or giving English lessons via Skype.

3. Culips는 ESL 학생들에게 영어를 가르치는데 있어서는 전문가일 텐데요, 영어학습의 성공을 위해서 어떤 중요한 요소를 꼽을 수 있을까요?

제 의견으로는 다른 언어를 배울 때, 가장 중요한 점들 중 하나가 그 언어를 가능한 한 많이 사용하는 것입니다. 실수에 대한 두려움을 갖지 않으면서 말이죠.

4. 한국에는 상당수의 사람들이 영어를 배우기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 그런데 애석하게도, 영어로 이야기를 하는데 있어 자신감을 갖거나 자기 만족을 갖는 단계로 가기는 쉽지 않은 것이 사실입니다. 한국인들이 영어학습에서 자신의 목표를 이룰 수 있도록 어떤 조언을 해줄 수 있는지요?

이야기하는데 있어서 자신감이 생길때까지 기다리지 마세요. 저는 이제 한국에서 약 2년 정도 살았습니다. 영어로 이야기할 때 실수에 대한 두려움은 많은 한국인들의 영어 학습을 방해하고 있습니다. 한국에서는 영어 학습을 많이 강조하는데, 대부분의 학교에서는 완벽함을 이루는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 학생들이 완벽한 스펠링, 발음, 문법을 학습할 때는 좋은 점수만을 받게 됩니다. 
그러나 새로운 언어를 학습할 때 그러한 것들은 실제 자신을 표현할 수 있는 능력과 비교해서 그다지 중요하지 않습니다.

남편과 제가 한국에 왔을 때 우린 한국어를 전혀 하지 못했었습니다. 그래서 우리는 식당이나 상점에서 서투른 영어 실력에도 우리에게 도움을 주려고 최선을 다하는 사람들이 무척 감사했습니다. 그들이 많은 실수를 하거나, 완벽한 문장을 만들지 못하거나, 발음이 좋지 않더라도 그런건 우리에게 크게 중요하지 않았습니다. 우리는 우리가 그들을 이해할 수 있다는 것이 매우 기뻤고 우리를 돕기 위해 최선을 다하는 그들의 모습이 감사했습니다.

요즘에는 더 많은 외국인이 한국에 살고 있습니다. 그들이 교사이든, 엔지니어이든, 학생이든 말이죠. 용기를 내서 이 사람들에게 이야기를 해보세요. 한국에 거주하는 대부분의 서양 사람들은 한국말을 그다지 잘하지 못합니다. 그래서 당신의 영어가 완벽하지 않다고 해서 당신에 대해 안 좋은 생각을 하진 않습니다. 당신의 영어는 여전히 그들의 한국어보다는 훨씬 낫기 때문입니다.

얼마전 부모님이 캐나다에서 한국을 방문하셔서 우린 서울에서 만났습니다. 그들은 길을 잠시 잃어 걱정을 하고 시작했습니다. 당황스런 표정으로 지도를 보고 있었는데, 친절한 한 한국 사람이 다가와 도와주겠다고 했습니다. 그의 영어가 완벽하진 않았지만 그는 우리 부모가 도움이 필요하다는 것을 느꼈고 용기를 내서 다가가 말을 걸었습니다. 그는 방향을 가르쳐주고 정확하게 찾아갈 수 있도록 직접 걸어가며 길을 안내했습니다. 우리 부모님에게 그가 영어를 완벽히 하지 못한다는 사실은 그다지 중요하지 않았으며 누군가가 그들을 도와주었다는 것에 상당히 감사했습니다. 그들은 캐나다로 돌아가서 얼마나 한국이 멋진 곳인지 친구들에게 이야기했습니다.

요약해서 보면 저의 조언은 가능한한 많이 영어를 사용해 보라는 것입니다. 명심할 것은 외국인들은 그다지 한국인이 영어로 말할 때 실수하는 것에 대해 신경쓰지 않는다는 것입니다.

5. Culips.com 의 가까운 미래 계획이나 목표는 무엇인지요?

앞으로도 우리는 새롭고 흥미로는 팟캐스트 에피소드를 만들어 Culips 팬들을 늘려갈 계획입니다. 그리고 우리는 전세계 영어 학습자들을 연결시킬 수 있는 방법에 대해서도 관심이 있습니다. 나중에는 서비스를 확대하여 교정(Editing) 서비스와 Skype을 통한 영어강의 서비스도 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대합니다.
